Character submissions for game 9 are now open! Read this page for more info.

In an effort to get less clutter on character ref pages, how about a discussion in the commets section for this news post? Before now, this news section was just collecting dust anyway.

What shall the game's theme be for this round? I'll post my own suggestion below in the comments ;)

So my possible idea for a theme is: An angry Mr. Ether wants to get his hands on Zero again, and a ragtag band of strangers have to band together to keep him safe from the evil doctor. What do you think?

That seems like an interesting idea. However, how would the mafia theme be a part of it? Would some of the strangers actually be secret agents of the doctor, or hypnotized?

And what would happen to the mafia's victims-? Kidnapped by the doctor?

@Lite Side o' d Force: The mafia could either be secret agents, bribed, or even threatened into betraying the team. They could even just be doing it because they're afraid Ether might want to capture them for experimentation.

@SPDark: I'm sure I could easily find a way to deus-ex-machina them all into meeting at the appropriate place. And since some of them already live in Valton, maybe some of them have already met him when out and about in the city.

Well if they're protecting Zero, they could have been paid (I can't remember if he still has the check or not, but either way he could agree to split it).

There are a lot of potential connections between characters, based on similarities in their description or backstories. That's something we'll want to look into, for sure.

Well, I like Kree's idea, but here's my mafia idea.
They should be employees for Mr.Ether's company, and Mr.Ether has ordered them to kill the innocents so that he can get back to taking Zero.

@LandenMaster: Yeah, I was already thinking something similar to that.

The individual mafia players can decide if their character is a mole in it for the money, coerced against their will by blackmail, or just scared for their own well being.

Aw Geez...I'm sorry if this is off topic, but I have to go to Texas for 6 days on vacation, starting this Sunday (Which is the day after tomorrow.), so although there may be wifi for when my family's there, I almost certainly will not able to upload anything, unless I want I upload it by using my iPod as a camera and use the Imgur app, which would likely be on a crappy view. Anyway, I hate to depart from this awesome webcomic for almost a week from posting stuff there, but there are things in life that are pulling me away from it, including the vacation. So, sorry..

I think that TG's (I can call you that, right?) vacation notice is actually a relevant thing to tell the group, as it could help Kree decide the starting date of the game. On this note, I would like to say that I am busy for three days starting this Monday. Job-help classes.

On a related note, how long are the day/night phases going to be?

Well, how does two weeks for the pregame comics sound? It'll give everyone time to get to know each other before the game starts.

The phase times depends on how often everyone is able to draw comics. What would people be comfortable with?

@KreeTheBasilisk: Two weeks sounds good for pre-game comics. It gives everyone at least one week to socialize with the other characters. Can last-minute characters enter the streets during that time?

As for day/night phases, I feel that one week per phase would be the most comfortable for me. But there's more than just me out there (hinthint).

I was thinking perhaps two weeks per phase, but that also seems a bit long. Perhaps two weeks for the day phase and one for the night?

Sorry everyone for not having anything ready yet to mark the start of the game. I've got myself stuck in a big art block on getting some sort of map or intro comic drawn.

I do at least have some practice sketches of a few characters at least. Just trying to get a feel for a few of the characters. (Apologies in advance for picking possibly the worst flat colours for Gargo, btw...)

One thing, though. I'm not sure if you were comparing heights at any point, but I believe that Lomiac is TALLER than Mr. Ledermann.
At least, I think.
Again, you might not have been trying to draw their sizes in relation to each other.

@LandenMaster: It's very likely that it would be up to the individual mafia members as to why they are doing what they are doing.

Personally, I don't think I'd enjoy seeing the characters killed off... there are so many awesome characters! I think that it might make more sense if the innocents were kidnapped.
That way, Mr. Ether would be less likely to attract the attention of the police, and he could "investigate" into the strange aspects of our characters...

Mark just reading a magazine :). Basile doing card tricks to air. Gargo holding the precious wrench.
I like your design for Iskios. It's very good. And I really like how Lomiac is holding his hands together nervously.
But where are Jade, Crimson Cross, Melodil, Rat, Miz, and Dismas Krant?
Also, I have an idea for the theme title: SJM9: Mr. Ether's Factory

@LandenMaster: I haven't practiced them yet, it was part of the reason I almost didn't post these sketches. But not to fear, I wont forget them for the actual comic pages!

As for the title, Ether doesn't really have much in the way of factories. He's more in the business of research labs. Secret ones...

Maybe the title/theme should be something related to the urban setting? We've already got quite a few street rats, Basile would probably do well as a street performer, and I'd imagine Gargo runs his own repair shop somewhere. I just can't quite translate that idea into a title...

Damnit, sorry for the lack of updates so far everyone.

It's so frustrating having plenty of ideas for how to lay out the intro pages in my head, but sitting here unable to get it drawn. Especially a city map, every time I try to create one it ends up looking like I tried to draw it on a cocktail napkin... :(

@KreeTheBasilisk: I don't know exactly why, but I think that "Concrete Round-up" sounds interesting, due to the fact that the characters are, more or less, being round-up for the sake of protecting Zero.

Mind you, I've been listening to a song with "Round-up" in the title.

Aww, it's not as catchy with only half of the idiom. :(

How about "Street (something)", can anyone make a catchy title from that? A good title would be something catchy that embodies the general theme will be using streets, buildings, parks, public transport, etc. as a backdrop for a cat and mouse game throughout the city. There might even be parkour involved... :P

Also, I'm having trouble deciding a good dialogue font for Zero, to best convey his analog-phone-line voice. There's two that sort of fit: "Idolwild", which is a wonky handwritten copy of a serif font; and "1942 report", which looks like a really old typewriter. But I'm not sure on either of them yet...

As for titles, I had previously thought of something like Urbania, but that sounds a bit cheesy, doesn't it? <:D

Welp, looks like I'm back from vacation!Finally! Since I'm back at home, I can now submit stuff with my scanner (And maybe use the Sketchbook Pro program after that if it doesn't take too much time off my hands.). Also, about the making a prologue page, is it actually necessary to make one, or is it just optional? If it's necessary, then I would have to rush myself into making one, since I came back today in 2 am in the morning.

@The Gamer: I might be mistaken, but I believe that simply refers to the game roles, such as "Innocent," "Mafia," "Police," etc.

@Lite Side o' d Force: No it's different from those. It's a means of assisting the storytelling by providing some extra purpose to the character's design. A job/role helps to further express who they are as a person.

@Twentydragon: I don't know. I mean, I'm sure she could have difficulty using the phone and/or computer, due to having frog hands (Or maybe not, who knows.). Not only that, but the goo on her hands would of have left a mess in her workplace if she did work as one.

@KreeTheBasilisk: Ooh, sounds neat and possible to use! And yeah, I guess I could add of what she does in the prologue page (If I do bother to make one..).

@Lite Side o' d Force: Sorry, but that's not what I was talking about, Lite, since that's suppose to be decided by the GM, who is Kree for this current game. I was rather talking about what job my character has, or what she is exactly.

To paraphrase PotC, the job/role rule is more of a guideline than an actual rule.

But to paraphrase Terry Pratchett, rules are there so that you think before you break 'em.

So while it's not actually required to have a job/role, you should be able to provide an equivalent amount of definition in the character's behaviour, skills, lifestyle, etc. In a nutshell: who they are and what they're doing with their life.
